Last month, PYD youth struck a pose on the runway for our 2nd annual Fashion Show.

This event provided PYD participants the opportunity to showcase their modeling skills, while also building confidence, creativity, and leadership. The best part? Models chose their own outfit and modeled Macy’s clothing on the runway. The morning began with our models getting their hair and makeup done and stepping into their runway outfits.

Participants’ family and friends, current and past PYD participants, supporters, and shoppers all gathered in the center of the store to watch the show. Amir Harper, a previous guest speaker at PYD’s Youth Leadership Forum, hosted the event.

Amir enthusiastically introduced each of the models, while DJ Eamon played a fun, upbeat song for everyone’s entrance.

Each young person confidently journeyed down the runway, proudly displaying their custom outfits, all smiling brightly as the applause rang around them.

Ava, a PYD participant and model, said of the experience:

“I liked my outfit a lot. It was very comfortable. I felt and wanted to look like a teacher having a fun night on the town. I was a little anxious…actually, a lot anxious. However, I really liked it. It was exciting. I didn’t expect the crowd to cheer and be loud.”

Ava’s mom added: “It was wonderful and inspiring. I was so proud of Ava because she looked amazing!”

Her dad echoed the statement, saying: “I was so proud of Ava and particularly proud of her confidence. She held it together wonderfully even though she was very nervous.”

Carla, mother of Maya, a PYD participant and model, proudly stated:

“As Maya’s mom I’m always so proud and happy to see that beaming smile as she walks down the runway.”

Maya added, “On the runway I felt confident and brave and beautiful. My experience was fun, my makeup was wonderful, and I loved my outfit. I chose this dress because it made me feel like a princess. I enjoyed being with the other participants and sharing our joy together as models.”

 

Gabriela, another PYD participant and model, excitedly recalled:

“I felt like a DIVA. Everything was well organized.”

Mayra, Gabriela’s mom, stated: “As a parent, I was so excited and pleased to see my princes in her moment to shine. Seeing that she is happy and enjoying the experience meant a lot to us. Thank you for making this happen for them.”

Jordan, a PYD participant and model, channeled her front desk job experience as her outfit inspiration: “I loved the orange color. It made me happy. I do the front desk and it is nice and bright.”

When we asked Jordan about the experience, she added: “I felt happy and stylish. It was so fun. I practiced walking down the aisle and posing. I liked shopping for my outfit and I am so glad to wear it again. I bought the whole thing!”

Jordan’s mom, Jody, stated: “This was such a wonderful event and a thrill for my family. Jordan had a great cheering section including her grandparents and her aunt. We were so proud of her and we could tell she was so proud of herself. She looked beautiful and confident and she was very excited to buy her outfit.”

Nataly, who was inspired by a great kindergarten teacher, chose a beautiful, sunny yellow look: “I felt very excited, happy, and like a great model. I felt accepted, regardless of my disability.”

Nataly’s mom, Alicia, added: “I felt very happy and excited to see my daughter give it her all. I’m grateful for the opportunity she was given. My daughter is happy, and I’m super happy.”

The fun didn’t stop there! After the show, participants were given Macy’s gift cards to go on a shopping spree. Families, friends, and PYD participants all gathered to congratulate the models on a job well done and celebrated their fashion show success.

The young people, families, and friends all had a blast. We can’t wait for next year’s fashion show!
