Over the past few weeks, the Career Readiness team prepared youth for a practice interview event. The students learned what questions to expect from interviewers, how to answer those questions, and examples of strong first impressions.
PYD staff and volunteers visited three high schools during the last week of March to conduct these mock interviews. Students were paired with a staff member or volunteer at a mock interview setup, which included sample interview questions, answers, and job listings. Students brought their resumes and knowledge from their classroom. They asked questions about workplace expectations, how to list skills on their resumes, and tips on how to dress for an interview.

Here’s what the students had to say about their experience:
What did you learn from today?
“I learned about communication, focus, and I also learned about if people get you mad, just walk away. Do what makes you comfortable at that moment. I also learned what skills I’m good at, and ones I’m not. If you’re not good at one of them, it’s okay – not everybody is good at everything.”

“Some people have struggles. At the end of the day, you still have the ability to do what you want to do in life. Be proud. Don’t give up.”

“What I learned in interviews is to listen to what your future boss tells you. Ask questions nicely. Just keep your cool!”
Thank you to the students, PYD staff and volunteers for their work on this year’s mock interviews!
