Below is an important message from PYD’s Executive Director, Tere Ramos:
Dear Friends,
On January 30th, the President of the United States made deeply troubling and misleading comments, falsely blaming Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies for the tragic plane crash in Washington, D.C. This rhetoric is not only factually incorrect but also dangerously reinforces ableist and backward narratives about disability inclusion in the workplace.
Let’s be clear: workplace accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and DEI initiatives are designed to remove barriers, not lower standards. Individuals with disabilities must still meet the qualifications and competencies required for their roles. To suggest that people with disabilities are hired solely because of their disability—rather than their skills, experience, and expertise—is wrong. It devalues their contributions and fuels harmful biases that have long excluded talented individuals from our workforce.
For 40 years, Partners for Youth with Disabilities (PYD) has worked to break down these barriers, ensuring that young people with disabilities gain the skills, confidence, and opportunities to become competent members of our workforce. We also partner with businesses and organizations to build more inclusive workplaces by challenging outdated and discriminatory assumptions like those expressed by the President.
Now, more than ever, we must push back against misinformation and fight for a world where disability inclusion is recognized as a strength, not a liability. We need your support to continue our work. Stand with us in advocating for a future where all individuals—regardless of ability—are valued for their talent and contributions.
✴️ Donate to PYD to support young people with disabilities in achieving their career aspirations.
✴️ Share this message to combat harmful narratives and educate others on the importance of inclusion.
✴️ Partner with us to build a workplace culture that welcomes and uplifts all.
At PYD, we unlock potential. We support disabled youth through mentorship, leadership, and career training while guiding organizations to build disability-inclusive environments. Join us in creating a future where every young person has the opportunity to thrive.
Best,
Tere Ramos
