To our PYD Community,

We often say that times are changing. Never has this been more true, and never has the level of uncertainty in the current environment impacted so many.

During times like this, it is natural that we as individuals periodically re-assess our opportunities and ability to make a difference in this world. As a result, I am saddened to announce that John Phelan has made the very difficult decision to step down as PYD’s Executive Director (ED) effective May 31, 2025. John will be returning to his career in public education as the superintendent of schools in his hometown. In this capacity, he will continue to be an advocate for students who are underserved, including students with disabilities, and we wish him well. To quote John, “This decision was extremely difficult, given that my time at PYD has been a wonderful journey of learning and of appreciation for the youth and disability community that PYD serves.”

Celebrating its 40-year anniversary in 2025, PYD is built on a solid foundation created by so many people who believe in its mission. The leadership team has spent the last few years re-evaluating the non-profit landscape, the needs of the disability community, and the programs and systems necessary for a sound future. As a result, PYD has emerged from this process stronger than ever and positioned for success. I am proud of what this leadership team and the board of directors have accomplished and I want to express my profound appreciation.

As we look to PYD’s future, I am pleased to announce that Lynn Gonsalves will be assuming the interim ED role effective June 2, 2025. Lynn retired from the PYD board of directors last year after reaching her term limit of 9 years, and brings a wealth of experience with, and knowledge of, the disability community. We are now commencing an executive search process to fill the ED position on a permanent basis.

I am also pleased to announce that both John Phelan and Tere Ramos (former ED of PYD) will be joining the PYD board of directors effective July 1, 2025. We look forward to their significant insights based on their transition work with PYD.

In this uncertain environment, we are so fortunate to be able to maintain a consistent leadership team that believes in the PYD mission. Thank you all for your unwavering support.

Sincerely,

Jean M. Joy
President, PYD Board of Directors
